My Adventure in Madagascar

By Tadzio Orzechowski

Starting Out

The year I turned 11, my Mum and Dad took me on a sailing trip. We planned to start at the southern tip of Madagascar and end in the north at Nosy Be. It was going to take 6 weeks and I would miss 3 weeks of school. While I was away I had two projects to work on. The first was for Save the Seas, an organization that looks after the oceans of the world. I was to take note of the good and the bad things that I saw in the ocean as we sailed up the coast. The second was a community project. I had 20 soccer balls sponsored by PG Glass which I was to give to the schools and children along the way to promote the Soccer World Cup in SA and teach children about soccer. Here is my diary that I wrote.

Hockey 2010 | Print |

altIt all started with a smash, a slap and a bang on 23rd January 2010; the first day of training that was to lead up to one of the most successful seasons yet of Oakhill Girls’ Hockey. After a total of 12 matches in 8 months, and a dozen games played whilst on tour in Holland, the girls are on a high, despite the slightly weary after effects of a demanding season. Our goal has been delightfully achieved as we have managed to win 4 of our “Big 5” games – the 5 local schools in our area being York, Glenwood, Principia, Knysna High and Witterdrift – and we can now gladly and confidently say that the excitement continues to build and we look forward to an exhilarating new season with renewed energy, fresh outlooks and only room for improvement.

Inter-house Netball | Print |
On Thursday last week the inter-house Netball took place. It was an exciting, fun-filled event, the way netball should be. We were up for all the challenges and laughs. The participation was also amazing and we were able to produce a full girls’ team from each house. Unfortunately the boys had some difficulties and were unable to pull their teams together, but they certainly did support their houses. The results were as follows, Jubilee first (VICTORY), Millwood second and Bendigo third, not far behind. Well done guys for an amazing afternoon! Reporter: Tiffany Barrett

“Bosuitstappie” | Print |
Last Wednesday Ms Barnard and her Grade 10 class went on an outing to the Knysna Forest to a place called Diepwalle to learn more about the background of the book they are busy reading “Fiela se Kind”, as the book was set in the Knysna Forest. It started with a talk by their guide Joey at the Big Tree. It was most interesting as he told us about how many people actually get lost in the Knysna Forest along the walking trails. He told us that the Knysna Forest is inhabited with three elephants and that leopards also roam the Forest. He then took us on a 6 km walk. Afterwards we had a picnic and from there we made our way to the Knysna Museum. It was an amazing experience as we went back in time to the olden days of our beautiful town. The Grade 10’s had a wonderful day and would like to thank Ms Barnard for making it possible. Roaming Reporter: Lauren Smith
